Welcome to The YEG Cronut Quest! We are on a mission to find the best cronuts in Edmonton. It’s a tough task, but someone’s gotta do it - and our arteries are up for the challenge! First question that you might ask: what is a cronut?! Cronuts are a croissant donut hybrid - featuring the shape and flavor of a donut, but encompassing the flaky and light texture of a croissant. 

Our first entry is fan-favourite Farrow!

Item on the menu: Churro cronuts with dulce de leche filling

Tell me more: Farrow has been serving up sandwiches, coffee and baked treats (including cronuts, donuts, brownies and muffins) since 2014. As of the time of writing this, Farrow’s cronut flavours rotate every month - previous flavors have included coconut cream pie, boston cream, strawberry cheesecake, caramel eggnog, and mega mixed berry chocolate, to name a few! 

Per their Instagram page, cronuts can be reserved at least 24 hours in advance by emailing catering@farrowsandwiches.ca to avoid disappointment, with a minimum quantity of six for pre-orders. Check out https://www.instagram.com/farrowsandwiches or http://farrowsandwiches.ca for more! 

So, how were the cronuts? We split a box of 6 cronuts to share, having pre-ordered the day before, and picked up our order to-go. At the time, the price per cronut was $4 with 10% off if buying 6 or more. Finding parking was a bit tricky at the Garneau location - they do not have their own parking lot so your only options are looking for parking in the community or if you get lucky, finding a parking spot on the street nearby. Otherwise, it was pretty much smooth sailing to pick up our cronuts. 

For our rankings, we’ll be looking at a few categories: taste, presentation, and value!

TASTE:

B: 4.25/5 - It was a delicious, flaky, and soft first bite. The crunchy texture was satisfying as the dulce de leche filling oozed through the cronut. It tasted like caramel combined with condensed milk. Though amazingly yummy, the filling was a smidge too sweet for my palate. But if you have a major sweet tooth, this is definitely for you. A true cronut with an extra shot of yumminess. 

C: 4.5/5 - First time trying a cronut and this did not disappoint! Soft and flaky and filled with delicious dulce de leche filling (the filling was my favorite part!)

G: 4.5/5 - Really enjoyed this! The filling was sweet and caramel-y but not overpowering, and the cronut itself was delicious, with just the right amount of sugar all over. Like a light and flaky version of a churro (didn’t know that was possible)! 

PRESENTATION:

B: 4/5 - Cronuts looked crisp and beautiful sitting in the white cardboard box. No other material or packaging in the box.. so as environmentally friendly as you can get?

C: 4/5 - Farrow kept it simple - packaged nicely in a white pastry box! 

G: 4/5 - Cronuts weren’t squished in their box, what more can you ask for? 

VALUE:

B: 4.5/5 - Worth paying for any day! 

C: 4.5/5 - If you have any doubt about paying $4 ($3.60 with the 10% off preorders!) for a cronut, just search up the amount of effort and time it takes to make a cronut! 

G: 4/5 - Definitely worth it, especially if you pre-order. 

FINAL THOUGHTS: Would you get these again?

B: YES. Though a smidge too sweet for me, it was still a really good cronut. We actually ended up eating the cronuts way way way after we got them and they were still good. I need to go back and try a fresh one. 

C: A resounding YES! I want to try their other flavors! As an aside: I saved one of my cronuts for the day after, and it was still delicious! 

G: Yes! Due to their alternating flavours I’m not sure when/if these cronuts will be back on the menu, but this has made me really excited to try their other flavours now.
