ENTRY 2: OHANA DONUTERIE

Welcome to The YEG Cronut Quest! We are on a mission to find the best cronuts in Edmonton. It’s a tough task, but someone’s gotta do it - and our arteries are up for the challenge! First question that you might ask: what is a cronut?! Cronuts are a croissant donut hybrid - featuring the shape and flavor of a donut, but encompassing the flaky and light texture of a croissant.

Our second entry is Old Strathcona staple Ohana Donuterie!

Location: 10347-80 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB

Item on the menu: Sundae cronut, topped with vanilla icing, brownie pieces, chocolate drizzle and sprinkles

Tell me more: Ohana Donuterie started out as a donut truck in June 2017 before they brought their malasada donuts to their current location in Old Strathcona later that year. At the time of writing this, cronuts at Ohana are available only on the weekend, starting each Friday until they are sold out, with flavours rotating each week. Past flavours have included “death by chocolate”, nutella, maple brown sugar, and buttered rum!

Cronuts can be ordered starting on Thursday evening online at https://ohanadonuts.square.site with no minimum quantity per order. Note that as of the time this was written, online orders are a must - you cannot walk in to purchase cronuts at their shop. You can order individual cronuts or as part of their cronut specialty box which comes with 1 cronut and 3 specialty donuts! Check out their Instagram page for more info: https://www.instagram.com/ohanadonuts/

So, how were the cronuts? We pre-ordered 4 cronuts the day before and picked up our order on Friday. At the time, the price per cronut was $4 + tax. In the past, we’ve found that online ordering with Ohana can be a bit unpredictable in terms of availability and timing - and they do have limited quantities and can sell out quite fast, so if you’ve got a cronut craving, order as soon as you can to avoid disappointment! Ohana has its own parking lot and picking up the cronuts was a breeze!

For our rankings, we’ll be looking at a few categories: taste, presentation, and value!

TASTE:

B: 3/5 - It was a fluffy first bite. Maybe too fluffy. I was hoping for a bit more of the texture and flakiness from a croissant. I would say it was more donut than croissant. But, if that’s how you like your cronuts, then this is the one for you! The vanilla dip and sprinkles were good, but adding on the brownie pieces was a tad overboard on the sweetness scale. If you have an incredible sweet tooth, then that bite of cronut, icing, sprinkles, and brownie will be incredible.

C: 3.5/5 - I enjoyed my first bite into this sundae cronut! I enjoyed the sprinkles and the brownie pieces! However, compared to Farrow, I found that Ohana’s cronut was more on the doughy side, and not as light and flaky. As I kept indulging in the cronut, it did get to be a little too sweet for my taste buds!

G: 3.75/5 - I have a pretty major sweet tooth but between the icing, chocolate and brownie pieces, this was almost too sweet for me! The actual cronut was on the denser side, and overall it felt like this was veering more into “donut” territory. That being said, I still liked the flavours, and the brownie pieces and sprinkles added different textures which was fun!

PRESENTATION:

B: 4.25/5 - The cronut was a work of art. Vanilla icing with sprinkles on top of a fluffy cronut and then topped with brownies. The visual appeal was amazing.

C: 4/5 - The cronuts were stunning on first sight and packaged nicely into an appropriately sized box! The box was a bit flimsy though - it fell apart in my hands when I picked the order up so be careful!

G: 4/5 - I originally gave this a 3.75 because of the box scare, but I have to admit - the cronuts themselves looked great! Each cronut definitely looked the way I would picture a sundae-themed cronut to look, and it was clear a lot of thought went into putting the components together.

VALUE:

B: 4/5 - Fair price to pay for a cronut with this many toppings.

C: 4/5 - I would say that $4 is a fair price for a cronut, especially since the cronuts from Ohana are quite substantial and include a lot of toppings!

G: 4/5 - Thought this was a pretty fair price given the size and toppings of this cronut.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Would you get these again?

B: I would try a cronut from Ohana again, but not this particular one. The sweetness was just too much for me. I am interested to see what the other flavours are like. Though I do wish the cronut had more croissant than donut to it.

C: Yes - but I would want to test out their other flavours. Incidentally, when these sundae cronuts sold out (super fast over the weekend!), Ohana came out with cinnamon bun cronuts which I would be super inclined to try! The sundae cronuts were a bit too sweet and indulgent for my liking, and I would want to try something simpler. As an aside: I tried a cronut the day after, and it held up pretty well!

G: Yes - I’d be interested in trying out their other flavours, and they’ve had some really interesting past concoctions! I am also super curious to give their cronut bites a try.
